We had a fantastic time with our belated St David’s Day celebrations in The Continental! The lessons were well attended, then we were joined by visitors by lunchtime – 28 of us in all – including someone from Liverpool Welsh Society and someone who used to attend the Welsh Society in Washington DC. Lunch was excellent, the presentations from two of our members were very interesting, informative and entertaining, and everyone was in good voice for “Hen Wlad fy Nhadau” and “Calon Lân.” There was fun, laughter and friendship. A day to remember. Our next meeting is back to its usual pattern on Thursday, 2nd April, 10.00am upstairs in the Harris Library. Lessons until 12.15, followed by a short meeting of the Reading Group from 1.00 – 2.00pm. All welcome.
Cawson amser gwych gyda’n dathliadau hwyr o Ddydd Gŵyl Dewi yn Y Continental! Mynychwyd y gwersi’n dda, wedyn daeth ymwelwyr i ymuno â ni erbyn amser cinio – 28 i gyd – gan gynnwys un o Gymdeithas Cymry Lerpwl ac un oedd yn arfer mynd i Gymdeithas Gymreig Washington DC. Roedd y bwyd yn ardderchog, roedd y cyflwyniadau gan ddau o’n haelodau’n ddiddorol, addysgiadol a difyr iawn, ac roedd pawb yn morio canu Hen Wlad fy Nhadau a Calon Lân. Roedd na hwyl, chwerthin a chyfeillgarwch. Diwrnod i’w gofio. Bydd ein cyfarfod nesa nôl i’r patrwm arferol ar ddydd Iau, 2ail Ebrill, 10.00 yb i fyny’r grisiau yn Llyfrgell yr Harris. Gwersi tan 12.15, ganlynwyd rhain gan gyfarfod byr y Grŵp Darllen o 1.00 – 2.00yp. Croeso i bawb.

There were 23 of us present today and again we were delighted to welcome a new friend, Joan. Thank you, Steve, for being a good ambassador for the Club and recruiting her! We held a productive Committee Meeting in the afternoon. The Club has 37 paid up members and continues to flourish and offer a range of activities. We agree that the learning sessions need to focus on developing confidence in speaking skills. Margaret was busy today, taking our orders for the “St David’s Day” lunch, which is not actually on the correct day, but on Thursday, 5th March, as part of our next regular meeting day. Please note that this will be in The Continental Pub on South Meadow Lane, Preston, and NOT in the Harris Library as usual. This is the structure of the day:
10.00 – 12.15: lesson time; 12.15 – 1.45ish: lunch time; 1.45ish: Presentations time(in English.) Deborah from Anne’s class will give a talk on “Myths of Wales”: Learn how the afanc from the Conwy Valley was defeated; discover where the physicians of Myddfai got their knowledge from; hear how three major rivers that have their origins in Pumlumon came into being. Pete from Eleri’s class will give a talk based on the travels of George Borrow, who wrote the classic “Wild Wales” in 1862.
I hope that as many members as possible will attend to support Deborah and Pete, who will have spent a lot of time preparing their materials to inform and entertain us. If you are reading this for the first time and are interested in joining us for any part of the day, just get in touch – preferably by email.
Roedd 23 ohonon ni’n bresennol heddiw ac unwaith eto cawson bleser i groesawu ffrind newydd, Joan. Diolch, Steve, am fod yn llysgennad da dros y Clwb ac am ei recriwtio hi! Cynhaliwyd cyfarfod Pwyllgor cynhyrchiol yn y prynhawn. Mae gynnon ni 37 o aelodau sy wedi talu eu ffi ac mae’r Clwb yn dal i ffynnu a chynnig gweithgareddau amrywiol. Cytunon ei fod hi’n bwysig i ganolbwyntio ar fagu hyder mewn sgiliau siarad. Roedd Margaret yn brysur heddiw, yn cymryd archebion bwyd am ein cinio “Dydd Gŵyl Dewi”, sy ddim yn cael ei gynnal yn union ar y dyddiad cywir, ond ar ddydd Iau, 5ed Mawrth, fel rhan o’n cyfarfod arferol nesa. DS fydd hwn yn nhafarn Y Continental ar South Meadow Lane, Preston, NID yn llyfrgell yr Harris fel arfer. Dyma raglen y dydd:
10.00 – 12.15: amser gwersi; 12.15 – tua 1.45: amser cinio; tua 1.45: amser Cyflwyniadau (trwy gyfrwng y Saesneg.) Fydd Deborah o ddosbarth Anne yn siarad am “Chwedlau Cymru”: Dysgwch sut drechwyd yr Afanc o Gwm Conwy; darganfyddwch o le gafodd Meddygon Myddfai eu gwybodaeth; clywch sut grëwyd tair brif afon ym Mhumlumon. Mi fydd Pete o ddosbarth Eleri yn cynnig sgwrs ar sail teithiau George Borrow, awdur y clasur “Wild Wales” (1862.)
Gobeithio bydd cymaint o aelodau a bo modd yn dod i gefnogi Deborah a Pete. Mi fyddan nhw wedu treulio lot o amser yn paratoi eu hadnoddau i’n dysgu a’n difyrru. Os dych chi’n darllen hwn am y tro cynta ac mae gynnoch chi ddiddordeb yn ymuno â ni am unrhyw ran o’r dydd, cystyllwch â ni – anfon ebost yw’r ffordd gorau.
We were a bit thin on the ground today, with several members struck down with coughs and colds. There were still 22 in attendance, however – and we welcomed a newcomer and an old friend we haven’t seen in over a year, so it was a very positive start to 2020. Both groups continue to make excellent progress. Anne’s group have purchased the Foundation level books ready for September. Many have also attended courses with Popeth Cymraeg over the new year and have gained much confidence with their speaking skills. We’re planning a revision course at the Stanley Arms in February, details to be issued in due course. The reading group finished “Yn Ei Gwsg” by Bethan Gwanas. Everyone enjoyed the book very much, considering it to be a really good story, well written, amusing – and with a great twist at the end. Our next meeting is on Thursday, 6th February 2020, 10.00am upstairs in the reading room in the Harris Library. There will be a Committee Meeting at 1.00pm.
Roedd sawl aelod yn absennol heddiw, yn dioddef peswch ac annwyd. Serch hynny, roedd criw o 22 yna – a chroesawon newyddyfodiad a hen ffrind dan ni heb ei gweld ers dros flwyddyn. Felly cawson ddechreuad positif iawn i 2020. Mae’r ddau grŵp yn dal i wneud cynnydd ardderchog. Mae grŵp Anne wedi prynu llyfrau lefel Sylfaen yn barod ar gyfer mis Medi. Hefyd mae sawl un wedi mynychu cyrsiau Popeth Cymraeg dros y flwyddyn newydd ac maen nhw’n magu lot o hyder wrth siarad. Dan ni’n bwriadu cynnal diwrnod adolygu ym mis Chwefror, bydd y manylion allan cyn bo hir. Gorffennwyd darllen “Yn Ei Gwsg” (Bethan Gwanas) gan y grŵp darllen. Wnaeth bawb fwynhau’r llyfr yn fawr iawn, yn ei ystyried yn cynnwys stori dda iawn, wedi’i hysgrifennu’n greftus, yn ddoniol – efo tro ardderchog yn y cynffon. Cynhelir ein cyfarfod nesa ddydd Iau, 6ed Chwefror 2020, 10.00yb i fyny’r grisiau yn y ‘stafell ddarllen yn Llyfrgell yr Harris. Cawn gyfarfod y Pwyllgor am 1.00yp.
